GEO vs AEO — what's the difference (and which to search for)
Generative Engine Optimization and Answer Engine Optimization describe the same buyer job with different names. Here's how marketers use each term in 2026 — and which tools to browse.
If you have seen GEO and AEO used as if they were two different markets, you are not alone. In practice both mean: get your brand mentioned or cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Google's AI surfaces a buying question.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the marketing-friendly label. It covers direct-answer surfaces — AI Overviews, chat answers, voice-style replies — and maps cleanly onto how buyers talk: “we need AEO.” GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) comes from research and tooling circles and stresses being retrieved and cited inside longer generative answers.
Search demand is split. People type “AEO tools”, “GEO software”, and “AI visibility” for the same shopping trip. Vendors pick the word that matches their last blog post. That is why a directory has to file tools by the job (track, improve, SEO suite, free checker) instead of by acronym.
For a directory like ours the split is useful only as search language. Someone typing “AEO platforms” and someone typing “GEO tools” often want the same shortlist: visibility monitors, citation trackers, and content systems built for AI answers — not a second SEO checklist with a new acronym.
What to do on this site: browse AEO platforms and GEO content tools, then open AI visibility monitoring if your first job is measurement. Primer: what is AEO. Crawl files: llms.txt / GPTBot.
Ignore anyone selling GEO-or-AEO as mutually exclusive products. Measure mentions and citations first, then decide whether you need content workflows, crawler analytics or an enterprise suite. The acronym on the invoice matters less than which engines it actually covers.
Common questions
Are GEO and AEO different products?
No. They are two labels for getting cited in AI answers. Buy the workflow (track vs write vs SEO suite), not the acronym.
Which term should I search?
Search both. Then open the listings. We keep AEO platforms, GEO content tools, and visibility monitors as separate shelves so you can start from the word you already use.
